21/08/08 - Exclusive: Daley comments on Shields fight
Top British fighter Paul Daley plans to take Jake Shields’ EliteXC welterweight title by force on October 4th.
The match has been announced by an EliteXC spokesman, who said that both fighters have verbally agreed to it and are in the process of completing contracts.
It is going to be Daley’s toughest test to date, but he is feeling confident - and planning a stylish victory.
“I will win by knockout for sure... Alves Vs Hughes style!” he told Fighters Only earlier today.
“Jake is a very tough guy, no doubt,” he explains. “But I would not have asked for the fight if I did not think I was ready with a winning formula.
“I have a great team of people, training partners and coaches here and around the world that believe in me.”
Daley, who holds the Cage Rage welterweight belt, is currently training at Mike’s Gym in Amsterdam, home to Melvin Manhoef and K-1 heavyweight champion Badr Hari among others.
He’s been there a few times over the years and finds the training, which he describes as “hard and intense”, is beneficial to his stand-up game.
And with a knockout ratio of around 73 per cent, Daley knows that the standing phase of the fight is where he wants to be.
“I’m not going to match him on the floor, I will knock him out standing - or maybe by ground and pound,” he says.
“Either way, I will be the champion.”
