15/07/08 - UFC 89: Two more fights added; card is taking shape
More fights have been announced for UFC 89, which takes place in Birmingham, UK on October 18th.
Fresh from punishing Jason Lambert at UFC 85, aggressive Brazilian fighter Luiz Cane will take on the ‘African Assassin’ Thierry Rameau Sokoudjou in a light-heavyweight bout.
And British heavyweight Neil Wain will be fighting Shane Carwin, who made his UFC debut in May.
Cane says he is “aware of how good this opportunity is” and is grateful for the opportunity to fight someone he describes as “a top ten fighter”.
“Sokoudjou is definitely a heavy hitter. He's someone with a good record and has earned everyone’s respect due to his impressive wins over top fighters in this weight division over the last two years,” he said.
"I will find where there are the gaps in his game and we will see how they fit with my game. I am very confident of what I'm capable of doing against him."
Promising a stand-up war, he said that his experience at UFC 85 in London showed him that the average UK fan “loves those who deliver stand-up wars - and this is what I like the most”.
"I love to go for the KO! There's no better feeling than knocking people out and this is what i did in all my wins but one,” he said.
"I think that’s why the UK audience likes me and I promise they will see me again just trying to do the things the same way I did in my last fight there.”
Meanwhile, Sokoudjou notes that Cane “is a very good puncher” and is “aggressive like me”.
“This could be the fight of the night but I am looking to build my UFC knockout streak,” he added.
On the undercard, Neil Wain (4-0) takes on American fighter Shane Carwin, 33, who is undefeated in his nine-fight MMA career.
Wain will be making his Octagon debut while Carwin will be in his second UFC fight, his first being a 44-second stoppage of Christian Wellisch at UFC 84 in May.
