21/04/08 - Event Report: Cage Warriors - Enter the Rough House 6

Cage Warriors - Enter the Rough House 6

 Saturday 19th April 2008, Nottingham

Dan 'The Outlaw' Hardy gave the perfect response to his trans atlantic detractors with a third round TKO of American Chad Reiner at Cage Warriors, Enter the Rough House 6 on Saturday.

The Nottingham-born fighter kept the welterweight title on British after stuffing numerous single-leg takedown attempts and eventually putting 'The Grinder' to the canvas with a right hand before finishing the fight with ground and pound.

The 25-year-old paid tribute to an opponent who took a lot of punishment without taking a backward step, but said the win gave him great pleasure after the abuse dished out by Reiner's friends on the internet.

Hardy said: "The guy is tough as hell, he's travelled a long distance and I hear he's been partying as well so that might have been a factor, but it was a tough, tough fight for me."

"I hit him and I saw in his eyes that he didn't know where he was, so I followed up and I knew that as soon as I started hitting him and he wasn't responding, it wasn't going to be long before Marc (Goddard, referee) called it off."

"It was very satisfying. I enjoyed fighting Chad, a great opponent, hats off to him but his friends however, emailing my girlfriend and my mum, that's out of order and it's unneccesary.

"I don't go on the internet to do a lot of talking, I do sometimes for fun to entertain myself, but I do my talking in the cage, as you could see tonight."

The partisan home crowd were given a scare in the first few seconds of the fight when Reiner got Hardy to the floor and almost secured a rear naked choke and then a guillotine, but the Team Rough House fighter stayed calm to escape from both submission attempts.

Reiner brought only one game plan, the single leg takedown, but Hardy was alert to it and stuffed the attempts time and time again in the second round, landing knees in the subsequent clinch.

Although Hardy was docked a point for grabbing the fence, he ended the round on a high when he dropped Reiner with a knee ten seconds left, but ran out of time as he tried to follow up.

A visibly drained Reiner was in trouble again in the third and after landing some crisp punches, Hardy threw a right that downed his opponent and allowed him to ground and pound his way to victory, delighting his home support.

Hardy believed that Reiner's stubborn insistence in going for a single played right into his hands. He said: ""My single-leg defence is my best takedown defence, I can defend them all day, as you saw tonight.

"I was surprised he got up after I dropped him and I was surprised he came out for the third, a credit to him for his toughness, but technically I was better than him, which is why I managed to beat him."

Another Rough House fighter with cause to celebrate was 'Judo' Jim Wallhead, who outboxed Irish fighter Tom Haddock and stopped him with ground and pound in the second round.

Roared on by the Leicester Tigers rugby team, with whom he trains at their Welford Road facility, Wallhead got back on the winning trail after a disappointing loss in Florida at the recent Cage Warriors USA event, and explained why he paced himself, despite getting the better of the EFR fighter in the first round.

He told Fighters Only: "He knew I'd like to take it to the floor and ground and pound him, but I didn't know anything about him so I just wanted to stand up and take it as it came. I dropped him once and I didn't want to rush.

Obviously confidence was a bit low so I wanted to build that back up with a win, and I got that."

Wallhead expressed his gratitude to the rugby stars who came out to cheer him to victory, saying: "I'd not met all the players before, just mainly all the backroom staff who I've trained with, so it was great to have them all here in support."

The night ended in disappointment for fan-favourite Ian Butlin, whose comeback, after a 10-month absence from the cage, was ended just 25 seconds into round one when he got caught with a heel hook by the impressive Cengiz Dana.

Frenchman Bendy Casmir did enough in rounds one and two to take a majority decision victory over Rough House standout Andre Winner, despite a third-round rally by Winner, when he eventually solved Casmir's takedown and landed some vicious ground and pound, only to lose on the score cards.

Martin Stapleton's relentless takedowns and effective striking from close range on the ground helped him to a unanimous decision win over up and coming future prospect David Johnson who looked dangerous standing and paid close attention throughout the fight to the advice given from cornerman and UFC fighter Paul Kelly.

Rough House welterweight Dean Amisinger submitted EFR's Jason Muldoon with a key lock in round one, Nottingham debutant Cliff Hall beat Nigel Whitear with a guillotine and Lee Livingstone rear naked choked his way to a fourth win against Adam Bairstow.

Local youngster Pete McGurk landed the only clean knock out blow of the night when he sent Richard Whitmore to sleep with a vicious hook in round one of an entertaining bout.

Matt '12 Gauge' Thorpe took just a minute and a half to finish off EFR welterweight and Cage Warriors fan favourite Mark O'Toole with a key lock.
