11/07/10 - Florian curbing his enthisiasm for Boston debut

Kenny Florian is excited about fighting in front of a Boston crowd for the first time at UFC 118, but he’s not letting it get to him. The lightweight contender expects his fight with Gray Maynard will be a bigger deal for family and friends than it will for him.

“It’s exciting. I’m more really excited for my family and friends to be honest,” Florian said. “For me it’s going to be, on fight night, a little bit louder than normal. But it’s going to be the same cage, the same rules and all the stuff is going to be the same,” he told the Boston Herald.

“I’m just focusing really on my opponent and all the other stuff. It’s nice. It’s something I can look back on. It’s a dream come true. I’m not trying to get too excited about it either. That could also take you away from what you need to do - perform that night.”

Florian goes into the bout off a two-fight winning run, with his last loss being to former UFC lighteright champion BJ Penn. His recent wins over Takanori Gomi and Clay Guida have put him back in the mix and if he beats Maynard he could find himself getting another title shot.

Maynard is undefeated and boasts a professional record of 9-0 with one ‘no contest’. He has wins over Nate Diaz, Roger Huerta and Frankie Edgar, the current lightweight champ, and is also likely to get a title shot if he beats Florian.

The lightweight title is up for grabs at UFC 118, with BJ Penn rematching Edgar, who took the title from him at UFC 112 earlier this year.
