08/07/10 - Australian Athletic Commission cancels half of Filho's fights
Paulo Filho has been told by the Australia Athletic Commission that he will only be allowed to have one of his scheduled two fights while in the country. Filho was due to fight on two shows being staged by Impact FC eight days apart from each other.
He was to fight on July 10th in Brisbane and then fight Denis Kang on July 18th in Sydeny. Now only the Kang fight will be going ahead. Oddly, Filho had also agreed to fight on a July 3rd show, since scrapped, making for three fights in just over two weeks.
“The Australian athletic commission didn’t permit that Paulo fight three times in such a short amount of time, unfortunately. But he’ll be going full on after Kang,” Andre Bottino, who works with some of the athletes that will be fighting for Impact, told GracieMag.
Filho’s participation in the Kang fight is by no means certain either. The troubled former WEC middleweight champion has pulled out of several fights at the last minute recently. He did fight in his native Brazil last month, but at heavyweight. The clash with Kang is due to be a middleweight match.
However, Filho is unbeaten in the four fights he has had since leaving the WEC in 2008, going 3-0 in 2009 and 1-0 thus far this year. Kang has only fought once since departing the UFC after his loss to Bisping, scoring a first-round submission win.
