07/07/10 - Shane Carwin finds out why body 'locked up' in Brock fight
Further to comments he made after losing his UFC 116 title challenge, Shane Carwin has found out what it was that was bothering him in the fight with Brock Lesnar and making him feel like his body had ‘locked up’.
“What happened to me July 3rd is called ‘Lactic Acidosis‘. It was brought on by a few things and mainly not breathing while exerting energy,” Carwin posted on Twitter today. Symptoms of Lactic Acidosis include deep and rapid breathing, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Interestingly, Lactic Acidosis also plays a part in rigor mortis, the condition that affects dead bodies for up to three days after the person passes away. A chemical change in the muscles - largely a significant amount of lactic acid build-up - produces stiffness in the limbs and makes them difficult to move.
Lest he be accused of looking for excuses he added another post almost immediately after the first. “Let me be clear, Brock won the fight, no issues with that. He earned the right to be the champion. Just passing on the info as it comes 2 me,” he said.
Carwin has had a rough few days. Not only did he suffer the pain of tremendous lactic acid build-up during he fight, he has also had to contend with a sore trachea following Lesnar’s fight-ending arm-triangle finish.
Earlier this week Carwin left a post on Twitter revealing that his doctor thought he had bronchitis, which is characterised by inflammation of the windpipe and airway - that is testament to the kind of squeezing pressure Lesnar’s arms can produce.
Carwin is now resting up after his fight but he has not given up on his title dream. In the latter of today’s three Twitter posts he wrote, that he is “standing at the base of the mountain and looking forward to the climb back up. I tasted greatness and I'm in pursuit of it once again.”
