04/07/10 - Liddell "having a hard time" with idea of retirement
Chuck Liddell is having a hard time accepting that his time as a UFC fighter may be over according to UFC president Dana White, who met with the former light-heavyweight champion on Thursday to discuss his future options.
"It's always cool hanging out with my friend, but Chuck's having a hard time with this thing,” White admitted to the post-fight press conference at UFC 116. "He told me tonight the show’s opening messed him up. [It was hard for him] watching the show open."
"You've got to understand, this guy's been in it longer than me. He's been around forever, and he loves the sport. All I'm hoping for is that he's going to make the right decision… I'm hoping he's going to retire."
Liddell’s position has been brought about by his recent losses. His knockout loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 115 was his third consecutive stoppage defeat and put him 1-5 in his last six outings, an ignominious run at the end of a glorious career.
If Liddell is absolutely determined to fight again it will surely have to be outside the UFC and that means he would have to obtain a release from his current contract. White says he would grant the release but with a heavy heart.
