17/03/10 - GSP: "I trained to fight an army, one man cannot break me"
Dan Hardy is the massive underdog in everybody’s betting book bar one - Georges St. Pierre’s Where many fight fans are writing Hardy’s chances off in his March 27th challenge for St. Pierre’s welterweight belt, the French-Canadian has him pegged as “the most dangerous guy” he has ever faced.
“I have to say something, a lot of people underestimate Dan Hardy and it is a big mistake. It is a big mistake that I am not going to make. Dan Hardy is the most dangerous guy that I have fought so far. He is very well-rounded and he is a very smart fighter, he is a thinking fighter,” St. Pierre said yesterday when asked about Hardy’s underdog status.
“He is not somebody that goes there and makes a brawl, he is a guy that is very technical the way he fights. He is a great counter-puncher. And he is surrounded by a great team, these guys are the most dangerous fighters. I have learned from my mistakes before and I never want to do that again. Right now I am the best GSP I have ever been. I have trained myself to fight an army of men so one man is not able to break me.”
The mistake St. Pierre refers to is the first fight with Matt Serra, when he lost his welterweight title in one of the biggest shock upsets the UFC has ever seen. St. Pierre feels he lost that fight because of poor preparation (Serra disagrees of course) and is determined not to be caught slipping.
“I have never been so pumped up for a fight. This loss to Serra the first time I fought him, I lost because of the situation and this time I am in the same situation so I think this fight is a little like a redemption. it’s a great chance to redeem myself in the same situation that I was in when I fought Serra the first time,” St. Pierre says.
Hardy relocated to New Jersey over a week ago to become acclimated before the March 27th UFC 111 event. While in the region he has trained with Matt Serra, who has fought St. Pierre twice. The champion says he expected the move.
“I am not really surprised. I think it makes sense but I don’t think it makes any difference to me. I don’t focus on what Dan Hardy does I focus on what I do. For me I am fighting the most dangerous guy I ever faced in my career and March 27th is a chance to reveal myself,” he commented.
“I believe I have a lot more pressure than Dan Hardy of course, and that is a good thing. If you look at all my great fights, all my fights where I had a lot of pressure - BJ Penn when I had Primetime, my revenge against Serra, Matt Hughes - all those great fights where I performed better under pressure. When I am under pressure I am more nervous, more awake, my reaction time is better. So that is a good thing for me.”
