16/03/10 - Shane Carwin relaxes by... going to work

For most mixed martial arts fans who train, the gym is there as an escape from the day job. For UFC heavyweight contender Shane Carwin, it’s the other way round. Carwin finds his daytime role as an engineer is a much-needed escape from the rigours of the MMA world.

Carwin faces Frank Mir for the interim heavyweight title on March 27th which means he is just one win away from a shot at Brock Lesnar and the full heavyweight belt. People are generally surprised when they learn that a man on the verge of winning the biggest title in mixed martial arts is not training full-time, but Carwin told Fighters Only today he would not have it any other way.

“For me the day job is a place for relaxation and right now its reduced hours. It’s a spot for me to get away from fighting and sit down around normal people that don’t care that I fight and i just have normal conversations and actually just live in the real world for a little bit,” he said.

“So its actually something that I enjoy and its something that I will continue to do. My boss is very supportive and he has become quite the fan. Luckily he is an athlete himself and I think that helps with getting some time off.”

Thanks to injuries and pull-outs here and there, Carwin has not fought since beating Gabriel Gonzaga in March last year. But he says the lay-off has been a chance to improve and get some valuable training time in.

“The time off has given me a year of technique to work on so when I step into that Octagon it will be a lot different to when I faced Gonzaga last time. I have been able to work on different aspects of the game and become a more complete fighter,”  he said.

Carwin challenges Mir for the vacant UFC interim heavyweight title in the co-main event of UFC 111 on March 27th. The event airs on PPV in the US and for the first time will also be available in more than 300 movie theatres across North America. A list of participating theatres can be found at UFC.com
