16/03/10 - Pudzianowski has contract for Tim Sylvia fight in May
Mariusz Pudzianowski has agreed to a fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia on American soil. The fight, to be staged by a company called Moosin, had been rumoured for late April but the World’s Strongest Man legend was scheduled to fight for Polish promotion KSW on May 7th. Polish television company PolSat did not like the risk of him fighting Sylvia two weeks before fighting on home turf in Katowice.
Today, Pudzianowski confirmed the fight for May 21st and said he was not concerned about fighting twice in such a short timespan despite being an MMA novice (1-0) and with the latter opponent being the former champion of the world’s top MMA promotion.
Dismissing the risk of being too injured from his first fight to partake in the clash with Sylvia he said “I know what it means to fight three five-minute rounds. I get another new opponent every minute when I spar and I handle that. So if I can deal with five foes in one round, there won’t be any problem with only one. Obviously there’s a possibility that I will break a leg or pull a tendon. It’s occupational hazard, but I don’t take it under consideration.”
However, Korean company Moosin is something of an unknown quantity in the promotion game and previously announced shows have not come to frution. Pudzianowski has signed to fight Sylvia but is he concerned the bout will not happen?
“I’m not concerned at all. I have a clause in my contract that once I sign it, within 24-hours I will receive certain percent of my purse for this bout. If it’s not there, I’m not going anywhere.”
The five-time World’s Strongest Man winner also revealed that he should be fighting former Olympic judoka Pawel Nastula in September this year. “Listen, I’m not afraid of anyone. I have my next fight on May 7th and another two weeks later, if everything goes as planned I’ll face Pawel in September. I do it step by step.”
With two of his next three opponents set to be a former UFC champion and an Olympic medallist, Pudzianowski certainly seems to be taking giant leaps in the quality of his opponents. Some might worry that he is taking on too much, too soon but Pudzianowski is not one of them. “My people, who work for me, they arrange everything. I don’t make any decisions without advice of my coaches.”
His next fight takes place on May 7th in Katowice, Poland and will headlined the KSW 13 event. Pudzianowski made his MMA debut at KSW 12 with a first-round win over former professional boxer Marcin Naijman.
