11/03/10 - Coker: Herschel Walker major asst for Strikeforce in press terms

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says that former NFL player turned fighter Herschel Walker single-handedly generated more publicity for his promotion “than Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz combined in the history of their careers”.

He made the comment in an interview with MMA Junkie as he discussed the positive effect that having Walker on the last Strikeforce card had. Despite the fight being his professional debut, Walker received extensive coverage from major networks such as ESPN.

"I think the networks, at first, were apprehensive about Herschel, and so was I, honestly, I was very apprehensive, but getting to know Herschel, and seeing his commitment to training at AKA and just who he is as a person and a martial artist, it was an honor to have him come fight for us."

"You saw all the mainstream press that Herschel was able to deliver, it was probably more than Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz combined in the history of their careers. I don't think I've ever seen that kind of media surge for any fighter in the history of MMA that Herschel Walker delivered for our Strikeforce fight."

Walker has not been added to the next Strikeforce card - which will take place in Nashville, Tennessee on April 17th - but is apparently eager to get back into action. Coker says he and Walker have been talking recently and the former footballer is almost certain to be back in the Strikeforce cage this year.
