10/03/10 - UFC 111 sold out, says Dana

UFC 111 is a stacked card with two highly-anticipated fights in the main and co-main events, so it came as no surprise when UFC president Dana White announced today that the show is sold out, 17 days ahead of showtime.

White announced the sell-out via his Twitter account today, which means there will be upwards of 17,000 fans crammed into the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey when Georges St. Pierre takes to the Octagon to defend his belt from plucky Brit challenger Dan Hardy.

Ticket retailer Ticketmaster still has some tickets available, but it should be borne in mind that a show is considered a sell-out when ticket sales reach a percentage that is almost 100 per cent. It is highly doubtful that there will be any tickets at the box office for walk-up customers on fight night.

But White has also kept some tickets back, and he has announced that these will be given out free in New York City close to fight time. As with previous ticket giveaways, this is likely to be done via White’s immensely popular Twitter account, which recently topped a million followers.

UFC 111 will mark the second time that the company has visited the Prudential Center. UFC 78 took place there in November 2007 and drew 14,071 spectators (that event was also said to be a sellout). Newark has also been targeted by other MMA promotions in the past, such as EliteXC, who believed its proximity to New York would attract fans from that state, which still bans MMA.

But the UFC is the only organisation that has thus far drawn an impressive audience in the Garden State. EliteXC’s foray into the Prudential Center, with Kimbo Slice as a headliner, drew 8,033 fans - and many of those tickets were complimentary.
