10/03/10 - Bonnar unsuccessful in UFC 110 appeal
Stephan Bonnar has failed in his attempt to have his UFC 110 loss to Krzystof Soszynski ruled a no-contest. The fight was declared a win for the Polish-Canadian after Bonnar sustained a massive cut that caused the fight to be stopped.
But at the time Bonnar indicated the cut had been caused by a head butt and a video replay indicated that this was indeed the case. But the Combat Sports Authority of New South Wales has refused Bonnar’s appeal and the result will stand.
"A review was held ... and the Combat Sports Authority of NSW did not seek to interfere with the referee's decision," CSA executive director Craig Waller wrote in an email to MMAjunkie.com. This is despite that fact that even Soszynski himself said after the fight a no-contest would be a fair declaration.
Instead, the pair are reported to be heading for a rematch in June, which will at least allow Bonnar the opportunity of proving he can beat Soszynski. But even if he gets the win, he still has a loss on his professional record which by rights should not be there.
For Bonnar, that is perhaps not as detrimental as it could be to another fighter. Bonnar has been told several times by UFC president Dana White that he has a job for life with the organisation following his war with Forrest Griffin at the TUF 1 finale, a fight which catapulted the UFC into the national US consciousness (at least, that of its 18 to 34-year-old males).
But for another fighter, a loss in such fashion has significant contract and career implications and it is hard to see how the newly-formed Combat Sports Authority of New South Wales arrived at the decision it did.
