07/03/10 - $10,000 cheques for WEC 47 bonus winners
Joseph Benavidez, Leonard Garcia, George Roop and Anthony Pettis were the bonus winners at WEC 47 last night, each taking home a cheque for $10,000.
Garcia and Roop earned "Fight of the Night" for a three-round war that confounded the judges, who came up with the rarely-seen ’split draw’ as the result. The fight was very even but a one-point deduction against Roop arguably cost him the fight. The judges scores were 29-27, 27-29 and 28-28.
Submission of the Night went to Joseph Benavidez for the frighteningly tight guillotine he applied to former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres. Benavidez was the heavy underdog going into the fight but dominated until he won and has now likely earned himself a title shot.
Anthony Pettis earned knockout of the night for a left head kick/ground and pound flurry that left Danny Castillo out for the count in what was probably the best finish of the evening.
In the post-event press conference, the attendance was announced as 8,345, making it the fifth-largest crowd that the WEC has ever drawn. How much of that was due to the event coinciding with the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus is unclear, but the WEC has also benefited from the UFC visiting the city three times previous.
