05/03/10 - Swick not fighting Serra, probably needs elbow surgery

Mike Swick says there is no truth to rumours that he is being lined up for a fight with Matt Serra in April, because his arm injury is so bad it will probably require surgery to correct. Swick sustained damage to his left elbow during his UFC 109 fight with Paulo Thiago.

“Not fighting Serra guys. Most likely having surgery soon. Dr appt on Mon. to figure out how they are going to fix my arm which is most certainly only [with] surgery. MRI results were pretty bad,” Swick wrote on his Twitter account today.

It will not be the first time that Swick has had surgery on an elbow. In 2008 he went under the knife to have some bone chips removed from his arm. They had been splintered during training and fighting and were causing discomfort for some months before he arranged to have them removed.

There is no news on Matt Serra’s next opponent now that Swick is out of the picture. Swick’s loss to Thiago was the first submission stoppage of his career and came on the heels of a unanimous decision loss to Dan Hardy at UFC 105. It is the first time Swick has lost two consecutive fights in his career.
