01/03/10 - Grove on standby for Overeem, Barnett in DREAM

British heavyweight Neil Grove is waiting to hear whether he will be fighting one of the world’s top two non-UFC heavyweights. Grove has been linked to a fight with either Alistair Overeem or Josh Barnett at DREAM 13, which takes place in Japan on March 22nd.

A source close to Grove said that there is nothing definite at the moment, only that Grove’s name is “in the mix” for a possible clash with either of the pair. Japanese organisations are notorious for not finalising cards and matches until the last minute, but Grove’s camp is hoping to hear something within the next week or so.

In the meantime Grove, who appeared at UFC 95 but lost to Mike Ciesnolevicz via heel hook, is training as normal in the hopes of getting a call-up. There is also nothing definite about Barnett or Overeem appearing on the card, although both Tim Sylvia and Antonio Silva are said to have turned down offers to fight him at DREAM 13.

Overeem is the subject of much speculation regarding his next fight. Fans are desperate to see him head to Strikeforce to defend the organisation’s heavyweight belt but there does not seem much prospect of that happening in the near future.

Fedor Emelianenko’s management are reportedly calling for Overeem to be drug tested before they will let Strikeforce match them, and Overeem himself has shown a marked preference for fighting in Japan over the last 12 months.
