08/02/10 - Sonnen trains for "fighting... not mental health and screaming the word YES over and over"

Chael Sonnen earned himself the number one middleweight contender spot on Saturday night with his domination of Nate Marquardt at UFC 109. But prior to the fight he also made himself one of the pound-for-pound funniest interviewees on the UFC roster (by accident or design we cannot tell).

His comments following the win over Nate Marquardt contained more comedy gold. In an interview with MMA Fighting, he explained what the difference was in his training that allowed him to earn a win in such an emphatic style:

“Some people don’t know what UFC stands for, the athletes are forgetting. It’s the ‘F’ that is confusing  everybody. Some guys think this is the Ultimate Mitt-Hitting Championships, some guys think it is the Ultimate High-Altitude Training Championships, the Ultimate ‘Let me go away in seclusion and eat all the fight foods for 30 days’ Championships. Its not, this is the Ultimate FIGHTING Championship.

“While these guys are out there swinging a sledgehammer or throwing a tyre around I am throwing fists at a partner’s head, neck and chest. I am fighting in practice every day and while I don’t meant we are sparring hard every day, I mean I am working on fighting things. I am not working on mental health and Anthony Robbins and screaming the word “Yes” over and over again.”

Sonnen’s fight with Marquardt over Saturday night came with a guaranteed title shot for the winner. Sonnen now finds himself facing either Anderson Silva or Vitor Belfort later in the year, depending on who wins their clash at UFC 112. Sonnen has said he would prefer to face Silva and his comments last week have already begun hyping that fight should it come together.
