07/02/10 - Marquardt "so sorry" to fans for loss to Sonnen

Nate Marquardt has apologised to his fans for his loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 last night, blaming it on a failure to follow the right gameplan. Marquardt spent most of the fight on his back being ground out by Sonnen’s elbows and fists.

“I'm so sorry guys.  I didn't fight smart.  I should have stopped the takedowns before going for the knock out.  I'll learn from this and continue to work hard.  Thank you all for your support,” he wrote on his blog this morning.

Sonnen took the win by unanimous decision and goes on to a title shot against the winner of Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort, which will take place at UFC 112 in April. The result of last night’s fight was a surprise to many, who had picked Marquardt to blow Sonnen away at some point in the fight.

Marquardt had a title shot against Anderson Silva in 2007 but lost by rear naked choke. Since then he has been on a tear and looked almost unstoppable at times. His demolition job on Wilson Gouveia at UFC 95 was one of the most stunning finishes to a fight in UFC history.

But he was unable to stop Sonnen’s takedowns in their fight and despite rallying at the very end of the third round, found himself the loser by 30-27 on all the judges’ scorecards. Sonnen’s win may have been unexpected, but he has certainly laid the groundwork for a meeting with Anderson Silva should The Spider retain his title in April.

In the run up to UFC 109, Sonnen repeatedly accused Silva of pretending not to speak English so he did not have to speak to journalists. He also said that reading interviews with Silva was a “nuisance” because of the middleweight champion’s (apparently) high opinion of himself.
