29/01/10 - Jay Hieron "My mom wants to watch me fight on TV"
Lots of fight fans have expressed confusion recently at Strikeforce’s decision not to televise Saturday night’s welterweight fight between Jay Hieron and Joe Riggs. Hieron’s mother is one of them, and the Xtreme Couture fighter finds the decision to put him on the preliminary card all the more baffling because he was initially being talked up as a title contender.
“A lot of people are asking me ‘why isn’t your fight televised’ or ‘why aren’t you fighting for the title?’ These questions I have no answer for - I don’t know! You know, my mother wants to see me fight, she hasn’t got to see my last three fights, they haven’t been televised,” he told Fighters Only in an interview this week.
“But its all good, I am going to go out there Saturday and do my thing, and bigger opportunities will come. All I can do is keep moving forward in the right direction and keep training hard. Everything outside of my control I am not worrying about. As long as I keep working hard my opportunities will come.”
Hieron was at one point being lined up to face Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce welterweight title, but Diaz is now facing DREAM standout Marius Zarmoskis for the strap in tomorrow night’s headline fight. Hieron admits he was not best pleased when the fight with Diaz fell through.
“Yeah I was frustrated because that’s the fight I really wanted, and of course I want to fight for a title. But I am totally over that, all of that is water under the bridge, the Diaz situation. This kid’s not even on my mind, I am not even focused on him at all right now. I am focused on Riggs 100 per cent and after the fight we will sit down and see what’s next.”
Hieron-Riggs takes place on the undercard of Strikeforce: Miami, which takes place in Miami, Florida tomorrow night and will be aired across the US on the Showtime network, and in Canada on Super Channel.
