06/01/10 - Renzo BB Gunnar Nelson signs for UK fight
Icelandic BJJ prodigy Gunnar Nelson (6-0) will commence his 2010 activities with a fight at UK show BAMMA on February 13th, it was confirmed to Fighters Only today. BAMMA (British Association of MMA) is based in London and will be televising shows throughout the year with an eye to becoming the UK’s most prominent non-UFC fight show.
Nelson is a black belt under Renzo Gracie and earned that distinction in just three years, marking him out as somebody to be watched very closely. Aside from training under Renzo, Nelson travelled the world seeking instruction and spend time in Hawaii with BJ Penn, while in the UK and Ireland he trained with SBG black belts Karl Tanswell and John Kavanagh.
Aside from his ground skills, Nelson also holds the distinction of being an Icelandic karate champion and earned the nickname ‘Shotgun’ from a fight report that commented on his style of ground and pound. Instead of launching a barrage of light punches from top position, he likes to create an opening and then “let them have it with both barrels”, was the description.
His opponent Sam Eldson is 2-0 and won an eight-man tournament last year. He is a first dan judo black belt and holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The fight - and the BAMMA event - will be screened on Bravo later this year. Bravo is the former television home of the UFC in the UK and is widely available.
