05/01/10 - Report: manhoef v Lawler at Strikeforce: Miami

Melvin Manhoef will make his debut for Strikeforce in a fight with Robbie Lawler on January 30th, it was reported today, at a show entitled Strikeforce: Miami. The fight was reported by Five Ounces of Pain, who said that the clash is “on the table” and cited sources close to he bout.

However, the report stressed that neither fighter has yet signed a bout agreement, although  a contract “is expected to be signed by at least one of the fighters shortly”. Manhoef’s presence on the card has also been confirmed by his management, who are looking to secure sponsorship for their fighter for this event.

Both Manhoef and Lawler are known as knockout artists but it is the Dutchman Manhoef that US fans are particularly clamouring to see. He has not fought in the US before but is well known for his fights in Japan and Europe.

Having fought for K-1 (kickboxing and MMA) and shows such as Cage Rage, Manhoef has established a reputation as a hard-hitting brawler. He regularly fights heavyweights in kickboxing matches despite being more of a middleweight himself.

Lawler is also known for putting people to sleep, with 15 of his 18 wins coming by way of KO or TKO. He is coming off a submission loss to Jake Shields but would have absolutely nothing to fear on the ground against Manhoef, bar being somehow mounted and under heavy fire.

Other fights pegged for the Strikeforce: Miami card are a welterweight title clash between Nick Diaz and Marius Zaromskis, and Bobby Lashley fighting and as-yet-unnamed opponent.
