18/12/09 - Penn talks about blood licking: “I gotta stop doing that”

Following his five-round dismantling of Diego Sanchez at UFC 107, an emotional BJ Penn licked the blood off his gloves and pounded his chest in an animal-like frenzy.

The UFC lightweight belt holder displayed similar post-fight behaviour against Joe Stevenson last year at UFC 80.

"(My boxing trainer) Jason Parillo said, 'Go out there. I want you to be the crazy blood licker. I want you to kill this guy,' "Penn explained in an interview with the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

Asked if the glove-licking had anything to do with the Hawaiian warrior tradition - Penn replied, "Maybe subconsciously it does."

"I gotta stop doing that," he acknowledged. "You get so crazy when you're in there, you just don't know what you're doing sometimes."

Saturday's stoppage of Sanchez was one of Penn's greatest performances. Many thought ‘The Nightmare' would trouble ‘The Prodigy' but Penn was utterly dominant. According to Fightmetric  the Hawaiian landed 150 strikes - while his opponent was on target only eight times.

"That's the best I ever felt walking into the octagon," Penn commented.
