16/12/09 - GSP again voted Canadian Athlete of the year
UFC Welterweight Champion George St Pierre has - for the second year in a row - been voted Canadian Athlete of the Year.
The popular fighter scooped the honour - given by leading Canadian sports broadcaster Sportsnet - after receiving more than 60 percent of a public vote beating other famous Canadian athletes such as hockey star Sidney Crosby.
"Thanks to Sportsnet, all the fans. It's an honour to win the award two years in a row," St-Pierre told Sportsnet on Monday.
"Congratulations to Sidney Crosby, it is a great honour to be nominated with him. Crosby is a great hockey player and in a country where hockey is king it says a lot about the growth of MMA for me to win this award again."
St Pierre has been one of the fighters credited with bringing MMA in to the mainstream and such awards certainly drive our sport further and further into the consciences of the masses.
An ultra-talented athlete, with an astonishing work ethic - St Pierre is very much the prototypical mixed martial artist. It's perhaps his humbleness though that gives him such universal appeal.
Last week it was revealed that St-Pierre will defend his title against England's Dan Hardy at UFC 111, on March 27.
