25/11/09 - Gonzaga out of UFC 108
Gabriel Gonzaga has pulled out of UFC 108 after coming down with a staph infection, it has been reported today. “Sources with the UFC” have confirmed news of the Brazilian heavyweight‘s withdrawal, according to Yahoo! Sports.
“The promotion will wait until after Thanksgiving to come up with a list of candidates to replace Gonzaga… The most logical choice would be Cain Velasquez, who just lost his opportunity to fight on the card against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira,” the report states.
Gonzaga was due to fight Junior Dos Santos at the January 2nd event in a bout that was to be featured on the PPV main card. Nogueira was also due to fight on the card and also withdrew after suffering a recurence of the staph infection that laid him low earlier this year.
It is another solid body blow for the UFC, which has seen cards decimated through injury and other pullouts recently. UFC 108 has been particularly hard hit, losing the likes of Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin as well as the two Brazilian heavyweights mentioned above.b
