25/11/09 - Tito: "I was robbed"
Tito Ortiz did not mince his words when talking to Fighters Only about the result of his fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 106 on Saturday night. Ortiz was on the losing end of a split-decision, although one judge gave the whole fight to Griffin by 30-27.
“I thought I won the fight. I got fuckin’ robbed man,” Ortiz fumed. “But hey, it is what it is. I gave my heart and soul and after coming off of the injury that I had and getting surgery and coming back and fighting… I’ll be back man.”
Regarding the judges’ scoring, Ortiz cannot understand how one judge saw fit to award every single round against him. “Maybe it was a draw, but I don’t see how you can score it a 30-27 when I dominated the way I did in the first and second rounds,” he said.
“Oh well, it will make it better for match number three. And like I’ve been saying, maybe Dana will make me and Forrest into The Ultimate Fighter coaches and we will get a great season out of the whole thing.”
Ortiz said immediately after the fight that he had carried some injuries into the bout and he expanded further on that when talking to us. Having had back surgery earlier this year, some thought that might have been a problem for him but the issues apparently lay elsewhere.
“My back is good man, my back is fine, I have no problem with my back at all. My orbital bone is a little sore, I might have cracked it in camp, but I wasn’t looking for excuses to pull out. I am stepping out to fight. The injuries I had, any other fighter would have pulled out of the fight but I come in and I fight,” the former light-heavyweight said.
“I wasn’t [fully fit in camp], I sparred like maybe once. But I am not looking to make excuses man, Forrest came out and he fought and I came out and fought, I put on a show - that was my job, was to put on a show - I thought I won the rounds, first and second, Forrest won the third round. It might have been a 10-8 because I threw what, five or six punches, two kicks… I was gassed man, but I didn’t let him drop me. I ate all his punches.”
Ortiz’s next fight in the UFC has not yet been determined, but he was supposed to meet Mark Coleman at UFC 106 and that match may still potentially be made. However, Coleman has agreed to face Randy Couture at UFC 109, delaying the prospect of Ortiz-Coleman until later in 2010.
