17/11/09 - Carwin has not had knee surgery, available after 108
Shane Carwin has not in fact had knee surgery, he is merely rehabilitant a grad II MCL strain that has been bothering him for some time. UFC president Dana White said at the post-105 press conference that Carwin had undergone knee surgery and would be sidelined for some time.
But “sources close to Carwin's camp have indicated that the number-one contender for the heavyweight title is simply rehabbing his knee and did not undergo any surgical procedures,” according to Heavy.com
Carwin had an MRI scan and was advised on the basis of that not to do any grappling for three weeks, which ruled him out of UFC 108 but made him available for any event thereafter. However, Brock Lesnar’s indefinite hiatus from competition has made that a moot point.
Lesnar was today reported to be suffering from a disease of the intestinal tract, with some sources saying the heavyweight champion will require surgery. However, other reports indicate that the affliction can be treated with antibiotics.
The only clear thing is that the UFC heavyweight division once again faces the long-term absence of its heavyweight champion much as did when Randy Couture was involved in a contract dispute. In that case, the company created an interim title and that seems the likely next step in the present circumstances.
