05/11/09 - Carwin to undergo MRI scan for knee injury
With Brock Lesnar now unable to meet him at UFC 108, Shane Carwin is going to use the time off to get a nagging injury looked at.
His management told Fighters Only tonight that his knee had been “an issue” and Carwin himself says he is “going to get an MRI to see how bad my leg is. Might as well heal up and get a full check up.”
It is not known when the injury was picked up but as a wrestler, Carwin’s knee joints are subjected to significant amounts of wear and tear both in training and fighting.
Sporting knee injuries mostly involve damage to the ACL and/or MCL ligaments, both of which often require surgery to heal properly. They are especially common injuries for fighters.
Among recent knee ligament injury sufferers are Mark Coleman, Patrick Cote and Chris Lytle. It was an injury of this nature that forced Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua to have two surgeries following his fight with Forrest Griffin.
With Lesnar out for an indeterminate period, it is not known what shape the heavyweight division will take in the coming months. One option is for the UFC to put an interim title up for grabs if it looks like Lesnar will be sidelined for some time.
