04/11/09 - Mir understands why Lesnar may be "nervous" about Carwin
Frank Mir says he understands why Brock Lesnar may have felt “a little bit nervous” at the prospect of facing Shane |Carwin in less than full health. Lesnar recently withdrew from his planned UFC 106 title defence against Carwin citing ill health, which he said had prevented him training properly.
Carwin responded by saying he would not have withdrawn from the fight if it had been him in the same position but, surprisingly, Lesnar’s arch-enemy Frank Mir does not disagree with what the champion has done.
“He does have a tough guy to fight, Shane Carwin is a tough guy. I remember when we heard Brock Lesnar pulled out my wife asked would I take the fight on short notice and I said ‘no, I am not taking a Shane Carwin fight on short notice,’” he told Steve Cofield of Cagewriter fame.“That’s a really tough human being. When we fight I want to be well prepared, you don’t take that guy lightly.”
“So I can understand from Brock’s point of view, if he’s not feeling up to it I can see him being a little bit nervous. At the same time though, I agree that Shane Carwin probably wouldn’t have pulled out because he is fighting for the title and he is probably super, super hungry. Maybe Brock is a little more content… he has nothing to prove and a lot to lose.”
Lesnar’s coach Greg Nelson has since told Yahoo! Sports that his fighter may not agree to the rescheduled January 2nd meeting if his health does not clear up very soon. This creates a problem for the UFC, which currently has four of its five champions on the injury list and one competing in December.
