31/10/09 - WEC confirms talks with Jens Pulver about return
Jens Pulver is in talks with the WEC about a return to the cage, company general manager Reed Harris has confirmed. “We’re talking to Jens. I cant confirm anything right now but Jens has indicated to us that he would like to fight again, I can tell you that,” he told Fighters Only last night.
Pulver was the first ever UFC lightweight champion and in the first half of his career racked up wins over BJ Penn, Caol Uno and Joe Stevenson. But of late his career has taken a turn for the worse and he is 1-4 in the WEC, having lost his last four fights.
Two of those fights were against former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and in their first meeting Pulver took him the distance in front of Faber’s home town crowd. But the next three fights saw Pulver finished inside the distance .
Does there come a point where the UFC would lose interest in him because of the losses or is his name big enough to keep earning him fights? Harris says its down to Pulver. “That [situation is] not exclusive to Jens. There’s certainly a time where every fighter should look at retirement but its up to Jens to decide if that is something he should be looking at.”
Despite the losses, Pulver is a legendary figure in MMA circles and loved by fans both for his in-cage achievements and the way he has overcome a horrifically abusive childhood that he described in his autobiography as “a living hell”.
