19/10/09 - UFC signs Australian light-heavyweight James Te Huna
The UFC has signed Australian light-heavyweight James Te Huna to a multi-fight deal, Fighters Only can exclusively reveal.
Te Huna (11-4) is based in Sydney and is well on known on the Australian MMA scene. He is currently on a five-fight winning run and his last outing was a KO win over Anthony Perosh, who has twice fought in the UFC.
Two of his four losses are to fighters who have competed at the very top level. One was a submission loss to PRIDE and UFC veteran James Lee, the other a submission defeat at the hands of Bellator champion Hector Lombard.
Mark Hunt, the former K-1 heavyweight champion and PRIDE FC veteran, is a training partner of Te Huna, who is comparably tough and extremely durable.
During one fight, Te Huna’s shoulder became dislocated from its socket. He asked to be allowed to pop it back in and continue the fight. The referee permitted him to do so and Te Huna went on to win the bout.
Te Huna has a brother, Tama, who holds a 3-1 record in professional MMA but has not competed since 2005. The family name reflects their links to New Zealand’s Maori natives, an infamous warrior tribe.
His addition to the UFC roster comes several months ahead of the organisation’s first show in Australia, which is set to take place at Sydney’s Arco Arena in February.
