08/10/09 - Anderson: "Someone will beat me, that's a fact"
Say what you like about Anderson Silva, but you cannot accuse him of being taken in by his own hype. The man hailed by UFC president Dana White as “the best pound for pound fighter on the planet” is well aware of his own mortality, as he told Fighters Only this month.
“Sometime, someone will beat me, that’s a fact. Someone will end up catching my arm, my foot and submitting me - this will happen, that’s for sure. If I retire before it happens, that’s fine,” he says in an exclusive feature interview in this month’s issue of Fighters Only, which features the UFC middleweight champion on the cover.
“But I want all the people to know that I am prepared for anything. I am training hard not to get hurt, but somebody will beat me. Is there anyone better than me? For sure, but we don’t know where he is.”
In the in-depth eight-page feature, Silva also gives an insight into his younger years. He worked at a McDonald’s in Brazil during the first part of his professional MMA career, beginning to train full-time only when he was offered a shot at the then-SHOOTO champion Hayato ‘Mach’ Sakurai in Japan.
Another revelation is Silva’s ambitions to join the police force in Brazil when he was young.
“I grew up in a family where all the men were police,” he says. “I grew up dreaming of becoming a police officer.” Silva also details his deep support for BOPE, the heavily-armed Brazilian police unit that combats drug gangs in the dangerous slums of Brazil. He says “every Brazilian should be proud of BOPE”.
