06/10/09 - Confirmed: Coleman tears MCL, out of UFC 106 Tito fight
Mark ‘The Hammer’ Coleman has suffered a second-degree tear of an MCL knee ligament and has been forced to withdraw from a planned bout at UFC 106.
His withdrawal was first announced by his intended opponent Tito Ortiz, who accused Coleman of being “a sissy” via his Twitter account.
Coleman’s long-time sponsor Mike DiSabato (of CageFighter) confirmed Coleman’s injury today and said that he has asked for the fight to be rescheduled for January 2nd, which will be the UFC’s first event of 2010.
He also criticised Ortiz’s comments, laughing, “Tito says ‘sissy?’ The only thing Coleman is afraid of is contracting swine flu from that d-bag!”
The fight would have been Ortiz’s first since coming back to the UFC. He left in May 2008 after fighting and losing to Lyoto Machida. He has not competed since and has had back surgery during his time away from competition.
The MCL, or medial collateral ligament, is one of the knee’s four major ligaments. Along with the ACL (anterior collateral ligament), it is one of the body parts most commonly injured in combat sports such as MMA and wrestling.
A tear is usually caused by the ligament being forced to turn the wrong way and can take anything from two to ten weeks to heal.
