02/10/09 - Anderson Silva verbally agrees to Vitor Belfort fight

Anderson Silva seems to be changing his mind about his previously announced retirement from mixed martial arts. Formerly certain about it, the middleweight champion hints he isn’t so sure now.

“I see my students improving in the training, I talk to Minotauro and start to become doubtful whether it’s time to stop... My family wants me retired, the sooner the better, but I don’t know whether I would be happy if I got retired now,” he tells Sensei SporTV in Brazil.

One thing that has got him interested is talk of a fight with Vitor Belfort for the middleweight title, something which has dominated the MMA headlines recently. Anderson does not believe Belfort would choose to stand with him, despite his legendary hands.

“I don’t think, I’m sure he wouldn’t fight me standing. Nobody would exchange hits with me,” the champion says. To him, it seems illogical for anyone to want to compete with him in stand up. “If I went to face someone from jiu-jitsu, I wouldn’t go to the floor,” he explains.

Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort have been expecting the official announcement from the UFC to headline UFC 108, which will be the first show of the new year. Belfort has verbally agreed to square off with the champion and Anderson says he has given verbal assent as well.

An exclusive interview with Anderson will be broadcasted soon in Brazil through Sensei SporTV, a Brazilian channel which presents MMA to the fans by pay-per-view.
