29/09/09 - Huerta: 'Maybe God saved my arm'

'It is well known that UFC lightweight Roger Huerta is strongly devoted to his Christian faith, but according to him the relationship goes both ways.

Huerta was recently on the receiving end of a horrifically far-gone kimura attempt at the hands of Gray Maynard, who told the referee the arm was about to break. But Huerta held on and managed to escape the hold, despite the incredible pain.

"Maybe it was just the adrenaline, or maybe it was God protecting my arm," Huerta told MMA Fanhouse. "I'll tell you this much: When he did start cranking it, I said, 'If it goes, it goes.' Even if it did break, I wouldn't tap. I thought, 'I'm not tapping. I'm finishing this fight.’”

He added that that the hold did indeed hurt, but said he was “willing for it to pop or break - I wasn't going to stop. I have my left hand and we're going to finish the fight. That's what was in my mind."

The fight was the last of Huerta’s contracted bouts with the UFC and thus far he has no intention of signing another, despite one being offered to him by the organisation.  Huerta is keen to explore opportunities in the acting world and, like Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson , has diverted his attention from the Octagon to the Hollywood hills.

At age 26, at least he has comparative youth on his side should he wish to return to fighting.  And with a 6-2 record in the UFC and a 20-3-1 record overall, it is unlikely he would be turned down by the top-level promotions should he come back to the fighting fold in the future.
