08/09/09 - Bisping-Kang definitely not UFC 105 main event
Michael Bisping versus Denis Kang is definitely not the fight that will headline UFC 105, Fighters Only has been told.
Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC UK Division President, told Fighters Only this afternoon that two “substantial” names will be headlining the November 14th event.
“We’re going to bring a big event to Manchester. It is a big venue and they deserve a big event, and that is the intention still. Having Bisping and Hardy on the card moves us in that direction and now we are waiting for Joe [Silva] to work his magic and bring us the main event,” he said this afternoon.
It had long been speculated that BJ Penn would be headlining that card in a lightweight title defence against Diego Sanchez, but that fight has now been confirmed for UFC 107. Zelaznik (pictured) says it was never actually set for 105.
“There have been a lot of rumours about the main event for this card but that is all they are, no main event was ever set. Its not as if anything has been cancelled or moved to another card. Sometimes those rumours are taken as fact, but they aren’t. “
Instead, the main event is going to be drawn from a pool of “four to six” fighters, depending what match-ups can be made between which names. Whoever the final two are, Zelaznik says the UFC top brass want UK fans to know the main event will be one to talk about.
“I’ve had email and text exchanges with Lorenzo [Fertitta, UFC co-owner] over the past couple of days and he said ‘Make sure everyone knows that there is a main event going to be announced soon’,” he says.
“And the names are going to be substantial, I kind of know the names that are floating around and once it comes together, everyone will know about it. Its going to be two fighters that everyone wants to see.”
UFC 105 takes place at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, England on Saturday November 14th. Tickets go on sale on Monday.
