30/08/09 - Couture talks new 6-fight deal; fourth fight with Chuck ruled out

Randy Couture says the new six-fight deal he has signed with the UFC means he will finish his career in the organisation.

“We just signed a new contract today, so there is a lot more than one fight left on the contract. “[It’s] 28 months, six more fights.” he revealed. “The opportunity to stay with the organisation is the motivation. Things being what they are, this is the place to be and I intend to finish my career with the UFC.”

Asked about the likelihood of him fulfilling all six fights of the contract, Couture, 46, said the future will determine itself.

“I am going to take it one fight at a time as I did 12 years ago when I first started this thing, and we will see where that goes,” he explained.

“Obviously I didn’t have the outcome that I wanted [tonight] but I still had a good performance overall. I think I did a lot of things that I trained to do in this fight tonight. We will evaluate that, see what I need to improve and we will take it one fight at a time.”

A return to the light-heavyweight division is a possibility but UFC president Dana White said the final decision rests with Couture.

“I would love to see him at light-heavyweight but he has proved he can hang with heavyweights,” White commented. “He had probably the best fight against Brock Lesnar - other than Heath Herring - since Lesnar has been in [the UFC].”

“He is always awesome at light-heavy, I think he is a monster at light-heavyweight. It is up to him to be honest with you, whatever he wants to do, I’m in.”

One fight that White does not like, however, is a fourth meeting with former light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.

“I don’t know if people want to see him and Chuck four times. And everybody knows how I feel about the Chuck thing,” he said. “[But] Chuck was texting me all night tonight about fighting again , so when he is done dancing I am sure he is gonna come looking for me.”
