24/08/09 - Anderson says Wand feud was "foolish media"
Anderson Silva recently stated that Wanderlei Silva would beat Vitor Belfort if they had a rematch. Some people thought that was an attempt to ’make up’ with Wanderlei after a much-publicised war of words, but the middleweight champion has refuted this.
“That was a sincere opinion about the Wanderlei vs Belfort match and not an attempted making up with Wanderlei. It’s only my opinion. I think it’s a good fight between two great fighters and that would sell a lot. It’s a good fight for both of them and I’d like watching it because they have already fought once,” he said.
But Anderson also has dismissed the “war of words” stories that appeared on many mixed martial arts websites over the past weeks. He says the articles were media attempts to build a feud.
“Most part of everything that was reported between us was foolish from the media,” he says. “The media wants to sell a polemic image of us and it was what happened.
“I haven’t got much to say about Wanderlei. He’s a great athlete and he showed himself to be a cool guy during a long time. Today we haven’t the same contact anymore. But I haven’t got nothing at him at all. I wish him the best wishes. He’s a great fighter.”
But it cannot be disputed that there were some cross words from both sides, with Wanderlei saying at one point that Anderson “should not mess” with him. A fight between the two would be big news, but Anderson says it is not on the cards at present.
“I’m training to fight the best. It’s a fight that I wouldn’t like to happen, but if it comes to pass it would just be another normal fight for me. There won’t be anything new in that fight for either me or him.”
