18/08/09 - Coleman v Tito at UFC 106
Mark ’The Hammer’ Coleman will face Tito Ortiz at UFC 106 which takes place on November 21st in Las Vegas, Nevada.
A source close to Coleman told Fighters Only the veteran fighter and former light-heavyweight champion agreed to the match and date earlier today.
The fight had already been widely speculated on messageboards since Ortiz dropped hints in interviews, but was not made definite until today.
Coleman was the first ever UFC heavyweight champion, claiming the belt at UFC 12 with a submission win over Dan Severn.
However, he lost it in his next fight and it would be three years before he hit the top of the MMA world again, this time by triumphing in the PRIDE FC 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix.
Ortiz returned to the UFC last month when Affliction ceased activities as a mixed martial arts promoter. Strikeforce was the only other viable destination but did not promise the kind of revenues available through fighting for the UFC.
He was the UFC light-heavyweight champion from 200 to 2003 and is also famous for his publicly acrimonious relationship with UFC president Dana White.
