03/08/09 - Gono not seriously injured, discharges himself from hospital
Akihiro Gono (29-15-7) has discharged himself from hospital and left the premises under his power, according to World Victory Road officials. WVR is the parent company of Japanese MMA company Sengoku, which staged its ninth event last night.
Gono suffered a bad knockout loss to Dan Horn buckle (18-2) at last night’s event and was unconscious for around five minutes.
He caught his neck on the bottom ring rope as he fell and doctors at first thought he may have sustained spinal damage because of this. He was still unconscious as he was stretchered from the ring and there were initial reports suggesting he had brain haemorrhaging.
But WVR has Japan-based MMA writer Tony Loiseleur that medical examinations conducted last night have shown there is neither haemorrhaging nor spinal damage.
Now 35 years old and having lost his last three fights, veteran fighter Gono must be asking himself where his future lies.
After more than 15 years as a professional, it may be time for him to hang up the gloves and pursue other ventures. He has previously provided commentary for Sengoku and this is something he may wish to explore as an alternative to fighting.
