26/06/09 - Anderson and Machida v Pacquiao and Mosely for ESPN award
UFC champions Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva (pictured) will be going up against Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosely in the ESPN 2009 sports awards.
Light-heavyweight champion Machida and middleweight champion Silva have both been nominated for the ESPY award for Best Fighter.
The award was known as Boxer of the Year until 2006. The following year it was changed from 'Boxer' to 'Fighter' to allow for mixed martial artists to be included.
Despite this, Floyd Mayweather Jr. won the award in both 2007 and 2008, over MMA luminaries such as Randy Couture, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and Georges St. Pierre.
Manny Pacquiao is the hot favourite to win the award this year but even to be nominated is still good mainstream exposure for Machida and Silva.
The award will be presented at a July ceremony held at Los Angele's Nokia Theatre and hosted by Samuel L. Jackson.
