20/06/09 - Sexton dominant in Bellator Finale

Despite a turbulent build-up, Rosi Sexton produced a dominant display in her fight with Valerie Coolbaugh at the Bellator Grand Finale last night.

Sexton was originally slated to face Jessica Aguilar on the card, a fight that had already been rearranged once when Aguilar pulled out of the original April date with a shoulder injury.

Aguilar pulled out of last night's card a week ago citing the same injury and Sexton was left without an opponent until Coolbaugh agreed to step in.

Sexton was mistakenly told the fight would be at 120lbs, not the 125lbs she agreed to face Aguilar at, so began cutting weight accordingly. But on Wednesday she learned that Coolbaugh had been told the fight was going to be at 125lb, and Bellator officials then confirmed this to her.

Despite suffering the effects of a gruelling - and needless - cut to 125lbs, Sexton was able to dominate almost from the opening bell.

After securing a trip against the fence she was in full mount or rear mount for the remainder of the fight - via the occasional pause in side control - before pulling off the armbar win at 3:40.

The win takes Sexton to 10-1 in professional MMA and cements her position as one of the world's top female fighters. Her sole loss is to Gina Carano, who now fights at 145lbs.
