10/06/09 - Machida's trainer explains KO secrets
Lyoto Machida’s newfound knockout ability comes from taking conditioning seriously, according to his physical preparation coach.
The new light-heavyweight champion earned a reputation for evasive point-fighting before scoring back-to-back knockouts in his last two fights, the second of which was a stoppage of Rashad Evans which earned him the belt.
His strength and conditioning trainer Eduardo Lisboa, a karate black belt under Lyoto’s father Yoshizo Machida, explains: “I did an evaluation of everything that he used to train and asked for a complete blood analysis to rate from the beginning up to the close of the fight and after that I set a periodization of cycles focusing on the physical qualities that needed to be improved.
So I worked on force, Power and ability. Before taking the physical preparation seriously, Lyoto used to attack and the opponent came through it. Now you see Lyoto hitting the opponents they are knocked down or back off him. But we still have to much to work on.”
Lisboa says that Machida “walks around 208 pounds and there’s no stress to his self in order to make the weight. He eats normally until a day before the fight but in the correct time and the exact amount so that it is easy to control the weight. Lyoto is very disciplined. The big deal is the recovery. The coach and the whole team has to Exchange ideas to respect the periodization between trainings and recovery.”
Machida is undefeated in fifteen fights and was the first man to defeat former champion Rashad Evans. His next fight - and first defence of the light-heavyweight belt - will be against fellow Brazilian Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua later this year.
