29/05/09 - Tim Sylvia might switch to pro boxing for good
Tim Sylvia could be done with mixed martial arts if the right fights do not appear for him, despite not wanting to leave the sport.
The former heavyweight champion - who makes his professional boxing debut against Ray Mercer next month - spoke to Fighters Only recently and said that professional boxing is becoming more and more attractive to him.
"I've done amateur boxing but never professional boxing," he explained when asked about the Mercer fight. "Its a test, its a fight. I didn't know when I was gonna fight [MMA] again and this kind of came around and presented itself to me so I said 'Yeah', you know?
"Its something I've always wanted to pursue and if it works out like I'd like for it too, I can switch over. I don't want to be done with MMA, but the money is a lot better in boxing. Plus its a lot easier on your body and its a lot easier to train for a boxing match than it is an MMA match."
Asked if a run at a title belt in the boxing world is on his mind, Sylvia is unequivocal. "Yeah absolutely, I would love to fight some of the heavyweight champs, you know? I mean the paydays are ridiculous!" he says, adding with a laugh "$10 million paydays, that is just stupid money."
But despite the lure of professional boxing purses, Sylvia is still involved in the MMA game and will find himself back in action at Affliction 3 in August.
The former heavyweight champion refused to confirm who his opponent would be at Affliction's third show, but did say he would be open to a fourth fight with Andrei Arlovski should Affliction wish to stage it.
