04/03/09 - UFC 99: Paul Taylor fighting newcomer Sobotta

Top British welterweight Paul Taylor (9-4-1) will be fighting UFC newcomer Peter Sobotta at UFC 99, Fighters Only has learned.

Sobotta (8-1) is a submission grappler who fights out of German team Unlimited Combat System. Despite his grappling credentials, he has actually won half of his fights by TKO.

He will be coming into the UFC off the back of a win over Kerim Abzailow at Polish show KSW (which has previously been described as “a mini-PRIDE” thanks to its high production values).

The fight will be Taylor’s first since dropping a decision to Chris Lytle at UFC 89 in Birmingham, where he also picked up a bad rib injury that forced him to turn down fights at UFC 95 and UFC 97.

Initially the injury was diagnosed as cracked or broken ribs, but after it failed to heal in good time it was reassessed and determined to be a displaced fracture.

Taylor (pictured) has gone 2-3 in his five UFC fights but has become a firm fan favourite thanks to his all-out style of fighting.

He has won three ‘Fight of the Night’ bonuses. Ironically, he was on the losing end of each fight he won a bonus for.
