23/02/09 - UFC returns to UK 'at end of summer'
The UFC will be returning to the UK in around seven months, possibly with two shows in close proximity, according to UFC UK division president Marshall Zelaznik.
Speaking to Fighters Only after UFC 95, he said that the UFC would probably return “at the end of summer” and also “possibly stage a show in early fall”.
Prior to that the UFC is looking to stage its first European mainland show in June, in the German city of Cologne, although event is still at the planning stages and not actually confirmed as yet.
Asked to give his thoughts on UFC 95, which drew over 13,000 spectators to London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night, he said: “Last time we were in Birmingham [for UFC 89] and I said it was a ‘coming out’ for British MMA, we had British fighters, British referees, and this is just a further extension of that.
“You know, I still think we are a couple of years behind where the US is. We are getting better and better media coverage, which I think is important to help spread the word; there is still a lot of misunderstanding about our sport.
“People you talk to that come to the show for the first time are blown away by the skill. They had no idea, they had all the misconceptions.”
