03/02/09 - Penn refuses to rule out retirement in latest interview
BJ Penn says he is unsure what his next move will be in the wake of his fourth-round loss to Georges St. Pierre at the weekend.
Talk of retirement has emanated from the Hawaiian’s camp and Penn has refused to dismiss those rumours, most recently in an interview with Hawaii’s Channel 2 News.
“I have no clue what is going on in my head right now… I was going to make this my last fight and finish up fighting GSP,” he said.
“In my head, I was with the [UFC] for nine or ten years and I kind of just wanted to be finished with this whole thing after this, so I don’t know where my head is right now.”
Meanwhile, his brother JD Penn says that they are still debating whether to pursue a complaint against Georges St. Pierre’s corner team using excessive Vaseline on their fighter, contrary to the rules.
“We don’t want to make any excuse or anything, we just want the fans to know that the commission has to have stricter rules and take care of the fighters and make sure it’s a fair fight,” he said.
“There is a lot of money and a lot of things on the line, a lot of people on the line, the fighter’s heart is on the line so they have go to make sure the fighters are protected.”
Earlier today, Nevada State Athletic Commission executive Keith Kizer said that St. Pierre’s corner team have been told that if they are seen using Vaseline in such a fashion again “that's it for them”.
“I don't know the outcome of this specific incident, but we definitely gave them a warning that if we ever see that happen again that's probably the last time they'd be cornering in Nevada,” he said.
However, he added that any attempts to have the fight declared a no contest would likely be unsuccessful because the commission rules do not consider ‘greasing’ to be grounds for such a move.
