03/02/09 - Alves on GSP: "I will knock him out"

Thiago Alves says that, while he was impressed with Georges St. Pierre’s domination of BJ Penn at the weekend, it has not put any fear into him.

In fact, the Brazilian welterweight - nicknamed ‘The Pitbull’ - is as confident as he ever was that he will knock St. Pierre out when they meet later this year.

"It’ll be a great fight. I’m very excited, I can’t wait... It’s going to be great," he told Tatame writer Cristiane Ripari.

On the manner in which St. Pierre handled Penn, he laughed as he said: “I expected it and I didn’t expect it, you know?

“I knew he would win, but not this way. He’s much bigger than the BJ, a better athlete, and the sport today, at that level, you have to be the best athlete",

But Alves is himself regarded as one of the top athletes in the game. He cuts a lot of weight - although he has missed the target on occasion - and his conditioning is excellent.

Unsurprisingly, the American Top Team fighter agrees with this assessment, and says this is why he is confident he will take the welterweight strap from St. Pierre.

"I’ll go there to knock him out," he states flatly, and having gone 9-1 in his last ten fight, with six wins by KO or TKO, it is a statement that has to be taken seriously.
