12/01/09 - CroCop knee surgery a success
Mirko ‘CroCop’ Filopovic has had surgery on his knee and expects to return to training in three or four months.
He told a Croatian newspaper today that the operation to repair damaged knee ligaments had been a success.
Filopovic has struggled with the injury on and off for the last five years and traces it back to a 2004 bout with Aleksander Emelianenko.
The Croatian kickboxer competed on New Year’s Eve – a TKO stoppage of Hong Man Choi – but entered the ring in a knee supports and wrestling boots.
Speculation that he was suffering from injuries was proved true after the bout, when he announced he would be having knee surgery.
However, that had to be postponed when he contracted influenza as doctors did not wan to operate while his immune system was compromised.
Filopovic recently said he expects to compete three times in 2009 and also talked of a retirement bout with the UFC.
Some have speculated that bout could take place at the UFC 100, when the organisation celebrates its hundredth event this summer.
