07/01/09 - WEC adds flyweight division; Cejudo a target?
The WEC is adding a 125-pound flyweight division just weeks after axing its light-heavyweight and middleweight divisions.
The news comes courtesy of MMA Weekly, which reported yesterday that the first flyweight bouts might take place in March.
As the WEC is the first MMA major promotion to add a flyweight division, the weight category has few star names at present.
But rumour has it that Henry Cejudo, won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is a WEC flyweight target should he move into MMA.
Another fighter who may be worth a look is Ramba ‘M16’ Somdet of Thailand, who grew up in a Thai boxing camp and spent more than half of his life competing in Muay Thai.
He switched to MMA recently and has amassed a record of 6-2 in mid-level shows such as Palace Fighting Championships.
Somdet has fans all over the world thanks to the legendary in-ring antics that earned him the reputation as the craziest Thai boxer in Thailand.
