06/01/09 - Mir v Lesnar II 'may take place in April'
UFC president Dana White says that the long-awaited finale to the organisation’s heavyweight title ‘tournament’ may take place at in April.
“Mir took little damage in his fight with Nog, and Lesnar wants to fight him soon, so April may be the time and place for that. It will be good,” he said earlier today.
Mir is coming off an upset win over Nogueira which saw him become the first fighter to stop the durable Brazilian.
Brock Lesnar is the reigning heavyweight champion after taking the belt from Randy Couture last year following the errant then-champion’s return to the fold.
Couture’s return prompted the UFC to announce what it described as a ‘tournament’ for the heavyweight belt.
This was precipitated by the fact that Antonio Nogueira, who held the interim belt in Couture;s protracted absence, was already scheduled to fight Frank Mir at the time of Couture’s return.
Couture went straight into a big-money fight with Lesnar, who lost his UFC debut to Frank Mir by way of kneebar submission.
The giant champion now says his submission game has improve immensely and he is eager for a rematch.
